Spicy Tomato Rasam


1/2 glass toor dal
2 large tomatoes (diced)
2 cloves of garlic (chopped & crushed)
2 shallots (chopped)
1/2 tsp sambar powder
1 tsp musturd
A pinch of asafoetida
1 tsp salt
Tamarind (lemon size)
Coriander leaves & curry leaves
1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper

Cook dal & keep aside.
In a bowl of water soak tamarind & keep aside.
Heat 1 tbsp oil a splutter musturd seeds.
Add curry leaves & shallots & fry for a while.
Then add chopped tomatoes & chopped garlic.
Add salt,sambar powder, asafoetida & stir well.
Then add tamarind water.
Simmer & cook for 5 mn.
Mash well the tomatoes with a wooden spoon .
Add cooked dal & stir well.
Garnish with coriander leaves & ground pepper.
Serve with rice.
