The ferry ride to Vivekannanda Rock is an expedition. This 10 mn ride is a real NDE.
You have to spend half a day queuing up, buying ticket & visiting. The ticket counter & queuing up area is sheltered to protect from the scorching sun. Those who are tired can sit & advance. Before boarding you are required to pick a safety jacket from the wet ground. The tourists are compelled to wear these stained, stinking, faded & torn jackets. Funny aspect is that these are French made :)
After this the nightmare starts. A death trap waits for U. Due to rough sea, the ferry rocks & the gap between the wharf widens every now & then. All the visitors are pulled aboard by two crewmen. As the ferry is overcrowded you can't even enjoy the ride. You must experience the same to disembark.
The entry fee to the memorial is Rs 10 & must leave the footwear outside. Don't forget to admire the beautiful views of the mainland from the rock.
Tamilnadu Tourism Dept must improve these ferries to prevent accidents.
