Goan Beef Xacuti
1 cup freshly grated coconut
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tsp fennel seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
1 tsp kashmir chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
3 cardomom pods
1 tsp black pepper corns
A cinnamon stick
4 garlic cloves
A piece of ginger
1 kg beef (cut in cubes)
1 tsp salt
2 onions (chopped)
2 potatoes (cubed)
A piece of cinnamon + 1 star anise
1/4 tsp nutmeg (grated)
1 tsp lemon juice
Oil for frying
Coriander leaves / Curry leaves
Heat oil in a sauce pan & fry coconut in to light golden brown.
Add the next ingredients & fry again.
Set aside to cool.
Add a little water & grind to a fine paste.
Mix the cubed beef with the blended masala & salt.
Cover & keep aside for half an hour.
Blend garlic & ginger in a mini food processor.
Warm the oil in a casserole.
Add cinnamon stick, star anise & coconut pieces.
When it turns brown, add chopped onions.
When it turns light golden brown, add marinated beef.
Fry for a while & add blended mixture (ginger+garlic).
Stir for a while & add water.
Cover & cook for 30mn, stirring from time to time.
When half cooked, add potatoes.
When the beef & the potatoes are done, remove from fire.
Addd lemon juice & stir.
Garnish with nutmeg powder & coriander leaves / curry leaves.
Serve hot with any type of Indian bread / Rice.
